📢 The 2026 Health Research Council Project Grants EOI round is now open
As usual 3 project categories are available:
– General: for projects designed to improve health outcomes for New Zealanders
– Rangahau Hauora Māori: for projects contributing to Māori health gains
– Pacific: for projects contributing to improve Pasifika health outcomes
The HRC has introduced several changes to this year’s round so read carefully the new guidelines to ensure your project aligns with their expectations. In particular, pay close attention to how 2026 project applications must address:
– Health research priorities
– HRC requirements
– Scope of interest for the HRC
It is strongly recommended to be acquainted with the Government Policy Statement on Health 2024-2027, the NZ Health Strategy and the NZ Health Research Prioritisation Framework.
Note that the HRC has also amended its assessment process. At EOI stage, applications will be independently scored by the Assessing Committees but the Committees will not meet to discuss applications. The top ranked applications will be invited to full stage. Moreover, EOI applications not proceeding to full stage will not be provided with feedback anymore.
💲Projects are usually funded for 3 years (but can be funded for up to 5 years) for up to either NZD$1,200,000 or $1,440,000 in the case of projects including randomised controlled trials.
📅 Deadlines:
– NEW: Project EOIs must be created on the HRC gateway by Wednesday 10 September 2025
– EOI applications must be submitted in the HRC gateway by Wednesday 17 September 2025
– Full applications submission deadline will be Thursday 11 December 2025
– Funded projects must start by 1 August 2026
